2 hosts set: Anthony Anderson on the Emmys, Trevor Noah on the Grammys

LOS ANGELES — Anthony Anderson, an actor-comedian nominated for multiple Emmy Awards, will be presiding over January’s strike-delayed ceremony.

The Fox network announced Anderson will host the Jan. 15 ceremony, which honors the best shows, performances and other work on television.

Meanwhile, former “Daily Show” anchor Trevor Noah announced he will be hosting the Grammy Awards for the fourth time in a row. The music awards show will air Feb. 4 live on CBS and Paramount+ from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

The Emmys are traditionally held in September but moved into Hollywood’s traditional awards season due to this year’s actors and writers strikes.

“Succession” is the leading nominee for its final season, with other HBO series like “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us” also receiving multiple nominations.

Anderson is a seven-time leading comedy actor nominee for his starring role in the ABC series “black-ish.” The show ended its groundbreaking eight-season run in 2022.

While this is his first time fronting the Emmys, Anderson is no stranger to headlining an awards show — he served as host of the NAACP Image Awards for eight years.

The Emmys will air live from Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Giannis sets Bucks’ record with 64 points

MILWAUKEE — Giannis Antetokounmpo scored a franchise-record 64 points to help the Milwaukee Bucks outscore the Indiana Pacers 140-126 on Wednesday night, with Antetokounmpo then at the center of a post-game confrontation over the game ball.

Antetokounmpo broke the team record of 57 set by Michael Redd in 2006 in a 113-111 loss to the Utah Jazz. Antetokounmpo’s previous career high was 55 in a 123-113 victory over Washington in January 2023. He had 54 at Indiana on Nov. 9.

“He’s an unstoppable player. You can’t guard him one-on-one. You’ve got some really good guys surrounding him, but at the end of the day, it’s all him,” Bucks coach Adrian Griffin said. “His talent. His ability. His will. He has an incredible will to win, and he’ll do whatever it takes to win. I’m just coaching the game and one of the coaches told me, ‘Yeah, Giannis has 50. I had no idea.’ But wow, what a great performance.”

Antetokounmpo was 20 of 28 from the field, made 24 of 32 free throws and had 14 rebounds.

He became the first player in NBA history to make at least 20 field goals and 20 free throws in a game while shooting at least 70% on each. It’s also the most points with fewer than 30 field goal attempts in a game in NBA history.

“It’s a great feeling. It’s a great feeling, being able to do it,” Antetokounmpo said. “As much as I can, I try to play basketball for the right reason. I try to play basketball to win, try to play basketball to help my teammates be great, but at the end of the day, being able to break this record in front of the fans here in this stadium, it’s a great feeling, too.”

The postgame was marred by an incident in the hallway near the Indiana locker room over who had the game ball, and who was entitled to it.

“What happened after the game was unfortunate,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. “There was a misunderstanding about the game ball. It was Oscar Tshiebwe’s first official NBA point, so we always get the game ball. We were not thinking about Giannis’ franchise record, so we grabbed the ball.

“A couple of minutes later, several of their players ended up in our hallway, and there was a big, I don’t know what to call it — a fracas, melee, whatever. I don’t think any punches were landed, but my general manager got elbowed in the ribs by one of their players.”

There also was a brief heated exchange during the game involving several players.

Antetokounmpo was tackled by Aaron Nesmith on a play underneath with 10:10 remaining, setting off the exchange. Nesmith was called for a flagrant-1, and Nesmith and the Bucks’ Bobby Portis were assessed technical fouls.

Antetokounmpo hit both free throws, and Khris Middleton hit a jumper on the next possession to put the Bucks up 108-96. Portis was called for a second technical and ejected with 9:13 remaining, finishing with 19 points.

Antetokounmpo scored seven straight for the Bucks to push the lead to 118-100 with 6:26 left.

Damian Lillard added 21 points for the Bucks. Lillard’s second 3-pointer with 8:06 left in the third quarter was the 2,451st of his career, moving past Kyle Korver for fifth place in NBA history.

Tyrese Haliburton and Myles Turner had 22 points apiece for the Pacers, who beat the Bucks 128-119 in the semifinals of the In-Season Tournament on Thursday night.

Antetokounmpo scored on a drive to put the Bucks up 96-80 with 3:40 left in the third period, but the Pacers to 101-94 entering the final period.

Antetokounmpo had 21 points in the first half to pace the Bucks to 70-63 lead.

No. 25 Northwestern stunned by visiting Chicago State

Wesley Cardet Jr. scored 30 points and Chicago State stunned No. 25 Northwestern in a 75-73 upset Wednesday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston.

Boo Buie made two layups 41 seconds apart to put Northwestern in front 67-65 with 2:30 left in a back-and-forth game. Cardet tied it 26 seconds later and then hit a 3-pointer with 1:23 remaining for a 70-67 lead.

Chicago State (4-9) sealed it with three late free throws from A.J. Neal and two by Noble Crawford.

“This is probably one of the biggest wins in the state of Illinois history,” said third-year Cougars coach Gerald Gillion, who had five brothers in the stands. “For Chicago State, not even a question. This was huge. Huge for our guys.”

Northwestern was favored by 24¹⁄₂ points, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

Buie had 23 points and Ryan Langborg scored 18 for the Wildcats (7-2), who lost to Chicago State for the first time. Northwestern had won 15 straight against the South Side program since the teams first met in 1981.

Cardet shot 13 of 21 and Jahsean Corbett added 17 points for the Cougars, a conference independent that climbed to NCAA Division I play in 1984.

Cardet, a 6-foot-6 junior guard, never ran out of gas.

“I trained really hard before this game,” he said. “I have a good team camp that keeps me mentally strong and helps me prepare for games like this.

“This is probably our biggest win, against a ranked team. This just shows how good we can really play and can compete with anybody in the country.”

Brooks Barnhizer scored 13 points for the Wildcats, who were trying for their first win as a ranked team inside Welsh-Ryan Arena since No. 6 Northwestern defeated Iowa 80-77 on Jan. 3, 1959.

Northwestern coach Chris Collins and his players said their team wasn’t as “connected” as it needed to be. Collins pointed to tepid 13-for-20 free-throw shooting, poor ball handling and being outrebounded at key times.

“Three things that really stand out were our 14 turnovers, and our inability to stop them off the dribble and then finish possessions with rebounds,” Collins said.

After toppling top-ranked Purdue at home each of the past two seasons, the Wildcats were coming off a 91-59 rout of winless Detroit Mercy on Sunday. Chicago State lost by 16 at home to St. Thomas-Minnesota before 127 fans that same day.

“If we’re locked in and ready to go like we usually are, I don’t think they come back,” Buie said. “When you’re unconnected and not ready to play, it’s hard to win.”

Cardet and Corbett got Chicago State rolling late in the first half. Led by the two guards from Florida, the Cougars scored the first eight points after halftime to take a 45-38 lead.

It appeared Northwestern had finally taken charge in the second half, opening an eight-point lead with 8:52 to go.

Cardet wasn’t done, though, hitting a 3 and then a dunk to put Chicago State ahead 62-61 with 5:32 left. Brent Davis sank a pair of free throws and Corbett added one from the line to make it 65-61 with 4:35 remaining.

“When we went down seven, eight, we just kept fighting, man,” Gillion said.

Northwestern led 38-37 at halftime after building a 10-point advantage 12 minutes in on a pair of free throws by 7-foot senior center Matthew Nicholson.

But scrappy Chicago State hung in, thanks to 13 points from Cardet and 12 from Corbett in the half. The Cougars shot 50% from the field and Northwestern hit 53.6% as both teams sank five 3-pointers.

Ty Berry and Langborg hit consecutive 3s to put Northwestern up 52-47 about seven minutes into the period.

It seemed only fitting that Oprah Winfrey chose to wear a flowing, full-length purple dress for her portrait unveiled Wednesday at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.

She told the assembled crowd that she wore purple not because a musical remake of the movie that launched her career is coming out later this month: “I chose to wear the color purple because for me, that color has been seminal in my life.”

As she pulled a curtain and saw the portrait by Chicago artist Shawn Michael Warren for the first time, Winfrey exclaimed: “Spectacular. Great job.”

This wasn’t the first portrait Warren had completed of the Chicago icon — in 2020, he painted a towering black-and-white portrait of Winfrey in the West Loop at 855 W. Madison St.

That mural is about 300 feet long and 26 feet tall and centers Winfrey, who is surrounded by colorful shapes and florals. It also includes a magpie that serves as Winfrey’s “spirit animal.”

The mural at the Porte Apartments, 855 W. Madison St. in the West Loop, is all about Oprah Winfrey, who for years taped her syndicated talk show nearby. The mural is on the side of the building that faces Green Street, between Monroe and Madison.

When that piece was unveiled in Chicago, Winfrey applauded Warren’s work.

“When I saw it, it took my breath away,” Winfrey says in a 2020 video. “I was so impressed by Shawn Michael Warren’s artistry, the creativity, the way he was able to capture a feeling of hope and inspiration and strength.”

The painting in the Smithsonian shows Winfrey against the backdrop of a prayer garden at her home in California. She is holding a sprig from an olive tree.

Warren said he had asked Winfrey to consider how she wanted to be depicted for generations to come.

“You could have chosen anyone, but you saw fit that an artist from the place you called home during your rise to prominence should be given this honor,” he said.

“To my muse, Oprah, thank you for gracing me with the task of capturing your likeness and essence, and entrusting me as a creative to depict you in all your joy and regality,” Warren wrote in an Instagram post.

Winfrey said her role in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film “The Color Purple” served as a foundation for her future. She hosted “The Oprah Winfrey Show” for more than 25 years, after it was first broadcast nationally from the West Loop in 1986.

She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.

The National Portrait Gallery said in a statement that her contributions to popular culture and her philanthropy earned her a place at the museum.

“Through her rise to fame as host and producer of ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show,’ Oprah demonstrated an unparalleled ability to connect with people and inspire them to become the best versions of themselves,” said Kim Sajet, the gallery’s director.

The portrait is nearly 7 feet tall. It will be on display on the gallery’s first floor.

During her remarks, Winfrey put in a plug for “The Color Purple” movie coming out on Christmas Day. She is a producer of the film.

Andre Braugher dead: ‘Homicide’ and ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ actor from Chicago was 61

LOS ANGELES — Chicago native Andre Braugher, the Emmy-winning actor best known for his roles on the series “Homicide: Life on The Street” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” died Monday at age 61.

Braugher’s publicist Jennifer Allen confirmed his death to the trade publication Variety.

The actor had his breakthrough role in 1989’s “Glory,” starring alongside Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington in the film about an all-Black army regiment during the the Civil War.

He told The Associated Press in 2019 that he struggled to find work afterward in a Hollywood where roles for African American actors were “few and far between. Period.”

But he would establish himself with the role of Det. Frank Pembleton, which he would play for seven seasons in “Homicide: Life on the Street,” a gritty police drama on NBC.

Years later he would play a very different kind of cop on a very different kind of show, shifting to comedy as Capt. Ray Holt on the Andy Samberg-starring series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” It would run for eight seasons from 2013 to 2021 on Fox and NBC.

Though he’d dipped his toe into comedy in the TNT dramedy “Men of a Certain Age,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” still represented a major shift for Braugher, who was known for acting in dark and heavy dramas.

“I just felt as though it was an opportunity to do something strikingly different from the rest of my career,” Braugher told the AP. “I like it because it just simply opens up my mind and forces me to think in a different way. So I think I’ve become much more sort of supple as an actor, and more open to the incredible number of possibilities of how to play a scene.”

Braugher was an 11-time Emmy nominee, winning in 1998 for his “Homicide” work and in 2006 as lead actor on the FX series “Thief.”

Braugher grew up on the West Side near Pulaski and Roosevelt roads and attended the prestigious St. Ignatius College Prep.

“I didn’t know it was a rough neighborhood,” he told the Sun-Times in 1998. “I didn’t know we were poor until I went to high school. Then I was like, ‘Oh, they’re rich and we’re poor.’ ”

He earned a four-year engineering scholarship to Stanford University, where he had a change of heart during his sophomore year.

“I was in the library doing my calculus equations, and I had no social life. I had never been on a date. I had never danced with a woman in my life,” Braugher said.

“So I said to myself, ‘What can I do?’ Of course, as opposed to the library, the theater is populated with charming young women,” said Braugher, who decided then to take up acting.

Braugher most recently starred in “She Said,” the 2022 film about the New York Times journalists who broke the story of Harvey Weinstein’s years of sexually abusing women. Braugher played Times editor Dean Baquet.

His other film credits included “Primal Fear” and “Get on the Bus,” and his other TV credits included “Hack,” “Gideon’s Crossing” and “The Good Fight.”

He was married for more than 30 years to his “Homicide” co-star Ami Brabson. They had three sons.

Notre Dame lands former Duke QB Riley Leonard

Notre Dame is going from one talented ACC quarterback to another after Duke’s Riley Leonard committed to the Fighting Irish on Tuesday.

Leonard, who helped the Blue Devils start the season with a stunning 28-7 victory over then-No. 9 Clemson, entered the transfer portal after his team’s 7-5 season.

He announced his intention to play for Notre Dame on social media, writing “A dream come true. Go Irish,” with a shamrock image at the end.

Riley is expected to take over the starting job that ex-Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman had for the Fighting Irish this season. Hartman joined Notre Dame this past season after five seasons with the Demon Deacons.

Leonard played in 27 games for Duke the past three seasons, throwing for 4,450 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He played in just seven games this season after sustaining an injury late in a 21-14 loss to Notre Dame on Sept. 30.

Michigan State quarterback Noah Kim has also announced his transfer destination and tight end Maliq Carr entered the portal.

Kim, who spent four seasons with the Spartans, will play for Coastal Carolina, he said on social media. Kim started the first five games this season before being replaced. He finished the season with 1,090 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions.

The Chanticleers quarterback the past four seasons, Grayson McCall, and his backup, Jarrett Guest, have both entered the portal.

Ex-Ohio State running back Chip Trayanum has committed to Kentucky. He also announced his choice on social media.

Trayanum was the Buckeyes second-leading rusher this season with 373 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught nine passes for 53 yards.

The Wildcats had success this season with a transfer portal tailback, getting Ray Davis from Vanderbilt. Davis ran for 1,066 yards and seven TDs this season.

Vic Davalillo, a two-time World Series champion who spent 16 seasons in the major leagues and won a Gold Glove in 1964, has died. He was 84 or 87, depending on conflicting sources.

Davalillo died on Wednesday in Caracas after an emergency surgery due to an intestinal obstruction and renal insufficiency, daughter Helga Davalillo said.

Baseball Reference lists his date of birth as July 30, 1939, but Davalillo considered July 31 his birthday and Asdrúbal Fuenmayor wrote in a 2006 biography that Davalillo was born in 1936. The 1969 Sporting News Baseball Register also used 1936.

Leones de Caracas in Venezuela’s winter league said it will wear a patch with Davalillo’s name and No. 2 on its jersey sleeves for the rest of the season. The ballpark in Cabimas was named after Davalillo in 1987 and the Venezuelan Winter League MVP award was named after him. While Cabimas is listed as Davalillo’s place of birth, Fuenmayor wrote in his book that Davalillo told him he was born in Churuguara.

Davalillo signed with the Cincinnati Reds in 1958 at age 18, starting as a left-handed pitcher, and went 16-7 with a 2.45 ERA in 1959 in three starts and 50 relief appearances for Palakta in the Class D Florida State League.

While Davalillo remained primarily a pitcher, his time in the outfield increased gradually in 1960 and ‘61, and he was sold to Cleveland after the 1961 season.

Davalillo won the batting title of the Triple-A International League in 1962 with a .346 average and made his major league debut on opening day in 1963 at Minnesota as the Indians’ leadoff hitter against Camilio Pascual. Davalillo got his first hit the next day off eventual Hall of Famer Jim Kaat and hit .292 with seven homers and 36 RBIs. His season was interrupted when he broke a forearm when hit by a pitch from Detroit’s Hank Aguirre on June 12, an injury that sidelined Davalillo until Aug. 10.

Davalillo was an All-Star in 1965, when he hit .301 with five homers, 40 RBIs and 26 stolen bases, finishing third in the AL batting race behind Tony Oliva and Carl Yastrzemski. He was traded to the California Angels in June 1968, part of a big league career that took him to St. Louis (1969-70), Pittsburgh (1971-73), Oakland (1973-74) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (1977-80).

He hit a three-run homer in his first at-bat for the Cardinals on June 1, 1969. He made his only two major league pitching appearances that June 30 and July 3, failing to retire any of the four batters he faced.

Davalillo finished with a .279 average, 36 homers, 329 RBIs and 125 steals, winning World Series titles with the 1971 Pirates and 1973 Athletics. He had a .323 average in 22 postseason games, including 4 for 20 in the World Series.

He was called Vitico by fans in Venezuela, where he won seven titles over 30 seasons from 1957-58 through 1986-87. He became the league’s first .400 hitter over a full season in 1961-62, the Society for American Baseball Research said, and won four Venezuela batting championships.

Oscar Prieto Párraga, a former owner of Leones, said Davalillo’s number should be retired throughout the league, which played the 2019-20 season in his honor. He had a .325 career average in the Venezuelan league with a record 1,505 hits.

Davalillo also played in Mexico with the Cafeteros de Córdoba and the Rieleros de Aguascalientes.

Davalillo married Luisa Ramona Barrera on Feb. 25, 1961, according to SABR, which said they divorced in 1969 and he married Zoraida Caraballo later that year.

Vikings beat Raiders 3-0 in lowest-scoring game in 16 years

LAS VEGAS — Minnesota and Las Vegas played the lowest-scoring NFL game in 16 years, with Greg Joseph’s 36-year-old field goal with 1:57 left giving the Vikings a 3-0 victory over the Raiders on Sunday.

It was the first 3-0 game since Pittsburgh beat Miami on Nov. 26, 2007, the third in the past 40 years and the seventh in the Super Bowl era.

Joseph’s kick ensured the game wouldn’t end regulation scoreless for the first time since the New York Giants played the host Detroit Lions to a 0-0 tie on Nov. 7, 1943.

The Vikings (7-6) had just 230 total yards, and the Raiders (5-8) — losers of three in a row — were limited to 201 yards and nine first downs. Minnesota beat an AFC West opponent for the first time this season after going 0-3.

It was Minnesota’s first shutout since defeating the Packers 16-0 on Dec. 23, 2017, and the first blanking of Las Vegas since its 24-0 loss to New Orleans on Oct. 30, 2022.

Nick Mullens relieved a struggling Joshua Dobbs at quarterback and led the Vikings on their lone scoring drive. His 22-yard completion to Jordan Addison to the Raiders 20 set up Joseph’s kick.

Ivan Pace intercepted Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell on the next drive. The Raiders managed to get the ball back with seven seconds remaining, but couldn’t pull off a desperation final play.

The Vikings lost wide receiver Justin Jefferson, the 2022 AP Offensive Player of the Year, in the second quarter to a chest injury. He was taken to a hospital, Fox Sports reported on its telecast. This was Jefferson’s first game back after missing the previous seven because of a hamstring injury.

Las Vegas lost running back Josh Jacobs to a knee injury in the fourth quarter. Jacobs led the NFL in rushing last season with 1,653 yards. He had rushed for more than 100 yards in two of the prior three games.

Neither team scored in the first half, the second time that happened Sunday. The Texans-Jets game also was 0-0 at intermission. According to Fox, it was the first time since October of 1998 that two games were scoreless at halftime on the same day.

Minnesota came closest to scoring, but Joseph missed a 49-yard field goal with 5:32 remaining in the half. That was the Vikings’ only first-half drive into Las Vegas territory, matching the number by the Raiders.

Las Vegas looked as if would finally break the deadlock early in the second half when Hunter Renfrow picked up 38 yards on a catch-and-run to the Vikings 11. However, Renfrow fumbled three players later, and Mekhi Blackmon recovered for Minnesota. The Vikings entered the game with a league-high 18 forced fumbles.

The game remained scoreless entering the fourth quarter, the first time that has happened since Week 17 of the 2017 season when the Cowboys and Eagles faced each other. It’s the first time the Raiders have ever been involved in such a game and the second for the Vikings — Nov. 14, 1971 against the Packers was the other.

MILESTONE SACK

Maxx Crosby became the fifth Raider to record 50 career sacks when he got to Dobbs in the second quarter. He is the first player in franchise history to get there in his first five seasons.

Crosby timed the snap perfectly to get a strong jump, forcing Vikings right tackle Brian O’Neill to hold him. Crosby fought through the hold to bring down Dobbs.

TRIBUTE TO VICTIMS

Crosby led the team onto the field carrying flags representing UNLV and law enforcement. The team had a moment of silence before kickoff to honors the three UNLV professors who were fatally shot Wednesday and two Nevada Highway Patrol officers who died after being struck by a car on Nov. 30.

INJURIES

Vikings: RB Alexander Mattison (ankle) was injured in the third quarter. ... RT Brian O’Neill (ankle) was hurt in the second quarter.

Raiders: DT Adam Butler (foot) and LB Kana’i Mauga (knee) were injured in the second quarter. Mauga had just been activated off injured reserve on Saturday. He was on IR because of a knee injury. ... C Andre James (ankle) was injured in the third quarter.

Glenbrook South alum Nick Martinelli came off the bench to hit 10 of 12 from the field for a career-high 22 points as Northwestern rolled to a 91-59 win over winless Detroit Mercy on Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

The Wildcats collected 29 assists on 34 of 61 shooting from the field (55.7%), including 10 of 24 from behind the arc, and never trailed.

Ryan Langborg’s 3-pointer 24 seconds into the game put Northwestern in front. Jamail Pink hit from deep for Detroit Mercy to tie the game at 5-5, but Ty Berry hit a jumper and followed with a 3 and the Wildcats never looked back. Berry hit a jumper and a 3 to open the second half as the Wildcats expanded their 43-33 halftime advantage to a 52-33 lead.

Langborg hit 5 of 9 from distance and finished with 19 points, four assists and four steals for Northwestern (7-1). Berry hit 6 of 8 from the field and 3 of 4 from behind the arc to add 16 points. Brooks Barnhizer added 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds while dishing seven assists with two steals.

Marcus Tankersley scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Detroit Mercy (0-10). Jayden Stone added 13 points.

Northwestern plays host to Chicago State on Wednesday. Detroit Mercy plays Loyola Marymount on Dec. 18.
